Watoto Church has unveiled its Christmas programme, led by its annual theatrical production, the Cantata, which will run from 17 to 21 December.

The show, which brings together more than 1,000 performers and crew, has become one of the church’s biggest events of the year.

At the launch held at Watoto Church on Bombo Road, Pastor Mwesigye, one of the ministry team leaders, said the Cantata has been staged for about 40 years.

He described it as a production built around dance, drama, audio-visual effects, and familiar Christmas music that retells the nativity story. He said the aim was to present what he called a message of “God’s redeeming love for humanity”.

Mwesigye said the event is intended as a gesture of appreciation to the wider community and will be free to attend.

“This is going to be an exciting Christmas festival. It will be a unique event where, as a church, we shall be showcasing what we believe is the tallest Christmas tree in Kampala,” he said.

The event, traditionally held at the Bombo Road campus, has been moved to the Old Kampala playground to allow for larger crowds. The church estimates that the new venue can accommodate at least 10,000 people.

Pastor Graham Tugume, who oversees worship at the church, said the Cantata has continued to attract interest because of its artistic range and the number of young people involved in its production. He said the programme has become a way of developing skills among young performers in areas such as music, acting, and stagecraft.

“We pledge total safety for everyone who will be attending,” Tugume said.

He added that money collected through the offertory during the event would be directed towards supporting vulnerable children.
