Matia Lwanga Bwanika, the Wakiso district chairman, has called on senior government officials to improve their oversight of government projects and ensure accountability, particularly in Wakiso, where they undertake their duties.
This directive was issued during a meeting organised to review the progress of work in the district, attended by senior government officials led by the head of Public Service, Lucy Nakyobe.
Bwanika expressed concern that some permanent secretaries appear to believe that projects can progress with minimal funding, limited resources, and insufficient staffing, despite Wakiso’s potential to excel due to its large population and significant revenue collection. He emphasised that without significant changes, local government operations risk losing credibility and effectiveness.
Residents echoed the chairperson’s concerns, urging officials to address critical issues such as poor healthcare services, inadequate road infrastructure, lack of clean water, power outages, waste management challenges, and other pressing problems.
In response, Nakyobe explained that the meeting aimed to identify the root causes of these issues to provide informed recommendations for improvement. She stressed the importance of understanding the challenges to devise effective solutions.
Among the senior officials present were Dr Diana Atwine, the permanent secretary ministry of Health, Yunus Kakande, Ben Kumumanya, the permanent secretary ministry of Local Government and Sharifa Buzeki, the executive director of KCCA.
