Salim Uhuru, the incumbent mayor of Kampala Central division, has been nominated to contest for a second term.
Immediately after his nomination at the Electoral Commission (EC) offices in Kyebando along Mawanda Road, Uhuru pledged to consolidate his recent development achievements. These include securing additional funding to support schools and forging partnerships with development organisations to advance his goals.
“I am here to seek your support as I contest for a second term. As you may know, I have spearheaded the construction and rehabilitation of Nakivubo Blue Primary School, and the construction of Kisenyi Health Centre IV is underway. These projects are operational and will enhance service delivery for our people,” Uhuru declared amid enthusiastic cheers and sloganeering from his supporters. [WATCH VIDEO BELOW]
Dressed in National Resistance Movement (NRM) party colours, Uhuru and his supporters turned his residence into a hub of activity. His motorcade, adorned with campaign posters, was accompanied by a youth band providing entertainment. Supporters enjoyed snacks and refreshments at his home before proceeding to the EC offices.
The lively procession brought business to a standstill along Wakaliga Road, Hoima Road, Wandegeya, and Mulago, culminating at Mawanda Road. Motorists drove at high speed, drawing the attention of street vendors and traders along the route.
At one point, Uhuru emerged from his open-roof Toyota Land Cruiser V8 to wave at supporters. Upon reaching the EC checkpoint, police restricted access to the venue, allowing only Uhuru, his wife, close aides, and seconders to enter.
Walking confidently alongside his wife, Uhuru inspired excitement among supporters, who hailed him as their preferred candidate to address challenges such as unemployment, poor waste management, inadequate school facilities, traffic congestion, factionalism, and tribalism.
As a central hub for all Ugandans, Kampala Central Division faces these issues prominently.
Political observers suggest that Uhuru’s chances of retaining his seat are strong, given the disunity, bickering, and factionalism plaguing opposition parties. A businessman-turned-politician, Uhuru began his political career as a lord councillor before defeating National Unity Platform’s Hamdan Ssemugooma in the 2021 elections.
He will face competition from Patrick Mugisa (Independent), Moses Kataabu (NUP), Hanifa Mpungu (PFF), and candidates from the DF, FDC, DP, and other parties.
