Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) supporter Daniel Izale has picked up nomination forms to contest the Adjumani West County parliamentary seat, which fell vacant following the death of former Second Deputy Prime Minister Gen Moses Ali.
Gen Moses Ali, who was also the Adjumani West MP, died at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala on July 18, 2026, aged 87. Parliament subsequently lost one of its long-serving legislators.
Izale, who identifies with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) but is seeking support from PLU, says he wants to continue serving the people of Adjumani West by focusing on wealth creation, government programmes and improved service delivery.
“I am not looking for a job but instead going to work for the communities,” Izale said.
He said his campaign would focus on helping residents benefit from government programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga and the Youth Livelihood Programme.
“We are going to create a lot of wealth among the communities,” he said.
Izale also said he would support efforts to fight corruption, which he described as one of the major challenges affecting the implementation of government programmes.
He was accompanied during the collection of the forms by PLU deputy director for mobilisation Henry Basaziza, who said the organisation was working with the NRM to identify what he described as the best candidate for the seat.
“We are waiting for the NRM primaries to second our Daniel Izale, and I hope he will take the position because we have a memorandum of understanding to work together,” Basaziza said.
Basaziza’s comments point to the political relationship between PLU and the NRM, with PLU leaders previously indicating their intention to work with the ruling party.
At least four NRM members are understood to have expressed interest in the seat, setting the stage for a party primary before the national by-election.
The Electoral Commission announced that it will conduct the Adjumani West parliamentary by-election on September 17, 2026.
The winner will complete the term of the 12th Parliament in the constituency following Gen Ali’s death.
For Izale, however, the contest is not only about replacing the former legislator but also about ensuring that government programmes reach ordinary people.
He said he would work with government institutions and local leaders to follow up programmes intended to support households, young people and small businesses.
The by-election is expected to attract interest because Gen Ali had represented the area for many years and remained an influential political figure in the West Nile region until his death.
As the NRM prepares for its internal selection process, Izale will have to compete with other party members seeking the party flag.
