Uganda has no individuals who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Intersex (LGBTQI) according to the 2024 National Housing and Population Census main report.
This revelation will come as a shock given that the country last year passed the Anti-Gay law whose supporters claimed was intended to stem the rising number of people identifying as gay or lesbians in the country.
The promoters of this practice contradicted our cultural and religious beliefs.
But according to the main census report all the people interviewed identified either as male or female which is a gender characterization.
Unlike other categories like religion which had “others”, the one on sex was strictly male and female.
The report shows that 21,566,736 said they were male while 24,338,681 identified themselves as female bringing the total to 45,905,417, which is Uganda’s population.
Yet it is also possible that a number of people in the LGBTQI category chose to identify themselves as either male or female because of the stigma attached to coming out as not being “straight”.
According to some surveys, Uganda’s LGBTQI community is estimated to have 700,000 people.
