How UCAA is helping girls to explore aviation careers at Entebbe Airport

One hundred girls from more than 10 schools are taking part in aviation career guidance sessions at Entebbe International Airport, where they are meeting industry professionals to learn about opportunities in the sector.

The event, marked under Girls in Aviation Day, is organised by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) and is intended to expose the students to careers in aviation

It is also amied at encouraging more girls to consider working in an industry that includes both technical and non-technical professions.

The programme includes career guidance sessions and networking with aviation professionals, followed by a tour of the airport and an opportunity to board an aircraft operated by Uganda Airlines.

The activities are designed to help the students understand how the aviation industry operates and the different skills needed to keep aircraft, airlines and airports running safely and efficiently.

Aviation offers a wide range of career paths beyond becoming a pilot. These include aircraft engineering, air traffic control, airport management, flight dispatch, ground handling, aviation safety, finance and administration.

The sessions give the girls an opportunity to learn about these roles directly from people working in the industry.

The airport tour is expected to give the students a closer look at aviation operations, while boarding a Uganda Airlines aircraft will offer a practical experience of an aircraft used in commercial air travel.

Girls in Aviation Day is part of wider efforts to encourage female participation in aviation, where young women can still face barriers to entering technical and leadership roles.

In September 2025, the UCAA marked the second edition of the event in partnership with AirServ and African Leaders in Aviation.

UCAA’s deputy director general, Olive Birungi Lumonya, said women accounted for 32 per cent of the authority’s workforce and called for more girls to pursue aviation careers.

The latest event at Entebbe International Airport provides another opportunity to introduce schoolgirls to the sector early, help them identify possible career paths and connect them with professionals who can offer guidance as they plan their education and future careers.
