The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) is hosting a delegation from the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for a week-long benchmarking workshop aimed at improving performance monitoring, evaluation and service delivery.

The workshop, held under the theme “Strengthening Performance-Based Monitoring and Evaluation for Improved Utility Performance,” provides a platform for the two utilities to exchange experiences and learn from each other’s approaches to managing operations and measuring performance.

Although NWSC supplies water and manages sewerage services while TANESCO generates, transmits and distributes electricity in Tanzania, the two public utilities face similar operational challenges.

These include managing costly infrastructure, meeting regulatory requirements, improving efficiency and ensuring that customers receive reliable services.

The visit gives the TANESCO delegation an opportunity to learn from NWSC’s experience in performance-based monitoring and evaluation, including how targets are set, progress is tracked and results are assessed to improve service delivery.

Performance monitoring and evaluation are important for public utilities because they help management identify operational weaknesses, measure progress against planned targets and ensure that available resources are used effectively.

For utilities that depend on extensive infrastructure and significant investment, effective performance management can also help improve accountability, operational efficiency and the quality of services provided to customers.

The exchange is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two institutions by providing an opportunity to share practical experiences and approaches to addressing common challenges in utility management.

Through the benchmarking exercise, NWSC and TANESCO are seeking to identify lessons that can be adapted to their respective operations, with the ultimate aim of improving institutional performance and customer satisfaction.
