Road accident claims 63 lives along Kampala-Gulu Road

At least 63 people are confirmed dead following a tragic road accident along the Kampala-Gulu Highway at Kitaleba Village near Asili Farm. The accident occurred in the early hours of today. It is the worst road accident this year.

According to a press statement from the Police, the fatal crash involved four vehicles: UBF 614X (Isuzu bus, Nile Star Coaches), CGO 5132AB 07 (Toyota Surf), UBK 647C (Tata Lorry), and UAM 045V (Isuzu bus, Planet Company).

Initial investigations reveal that the driver of the Isuzu bus (UBF 614X), traveling from Kampala to Gulu, attempted to overtake the Tata Lorry (UBK 647C) at the same time the second Isuzu bus (UAM 045V), moving in the opposite direction, tried to overtake the Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07).

This led to a head-on collision, triggering a chain reaction that caused multiple vehicles to lose control and overturn.

As a result, 63 people lost their lives, all occupants of the involved vehicles, with several others sustaining injuries. Police arrived promptly at the scene, transporting the injured to Kiryandongo Hospital and nearby medical facilities.

“The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the same hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem and identification,” police said.

SP Michael Kananura, the director of Traffic and Road Safety, urged all motorists to exercise maximum caution on the roads. He implored drivers to avoid dangerous and careless overtaking, which remains a leading cause of crashes in the country.

Investigations are ongoing.
