Nabakooba says all surveyors must regsiter with professional body

The minister of Lands, Judith  Nabakooba, has announced that her ministry is drafting regulations to streamline the work of surveyors.

These regulations will mandate that all surveyors register with their professional body, and no one will be allowed to operate without clearance.

Nabakooba made these remarks while officiating at the opening of the Joint 8th Advances in Geomatics Research Conference and 14th Eastern Africa Land Administration Network Conference 2025, hosted by Makerere University.

The conference, themed “Geo-enablement for Sustainable Development: Harnessing Innovation in Geomatics and Land Administration,” brought together participants from Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Uganda, the host country.

The minister emphasized that registering surveyors will ensure accountability and enable the ministry to enforce disciplinary measures. She highlighted that only 30% of Uganda’s land is currently registered, a factor she said has fueled rampant land grabbing in the country.

The Principal of the College of Engineering, Design, Art, and Technology at Makerere University, Prof. Moses Musinguzi, urged the ministry to adopt digital registration for land transactions to reduce fraud.
