MTN MoMo has contributed Shs15 million towards efforts to purchase a new Volkswagen Polo rally car for veteran Ugandan driver Ponsiano Lwakataka, popularly known as Mafumafu.
The car is expected to be used by Lwakataka in the upcoming rally at Victoria Rally Park on September 20.
Speaking at the handover of the contribution, MTN MoMo’s Simon Kayiwa said the sponsorship was intended to support Lwakataka as he returns to the competition with a new car.
“We are proud to support Ponsiano Lwakataka, also known as Mafumafu, to buy a new car that will help him continue taking part in motorsport. This is just the beginning of our sponsorship to the legendary rally ace,” Kayiwa said.
Lwakataka is one of Uganda’s most recognised rally drivers and has been involved in motorsport for about 25 years.
Reynolds Kibira, the general secretary of the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda, welcomed the sponsorship, saying it had come at an important time for the veteran driver.
Kibira said the contribution was a fitting way to support a driver who has spent decades promoting motorsport in Uganda and competing in major events.
Lwakataka thanked MTN MoMo for the contribution and said he was determined to give his supporters something to celebrate when he competes at Victoria Rally Park on September 20. [WATCH VIDEO]
The veteran driver also encouraged his fans to continue using MTN MoMo services, saying the partnership would help strengthen the relationship between him, his supporters and the sponsor.
Kayiwa said MTN MoMo would also reduce the entrance fee by 50 per cent as part of efforts to encourage more motorsport fans to attend the rally.
The sponsorship comes as Lwakataka seeks to strengthen his return to competitive rallying with a new Volkswagen Polo.
Lwakataka called on his fans to turn up in large numbers for the event and support him as he seeks victory at Victoria Rally Park.
He again thanked MTN MoMo for the Shs15 million contribution and urged his supporters to remain connected to the service.
