St Mary’s College Kitende has returned home from the 2026 Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games with three major trophies after winning the football, basketball and volleyball titles.
The 23rd edition of the regional schools competition brought together teams from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with Uganda hosting the games.
Kenya emerged as the overall winner of the championship, but Kitende was among the standout schools after producing strong performances in three major team sports.
The school retained its dominance in football by winning its 15th FEASSA football title, further strengthening its record in the regional competition.
Kitende also claimed the basketball and volleyball trophies, giving the school three major titles from this year’s championship.
Speaking as the teams arrived back at the school in Kitende, the school’s executive director, Dr Lawrence Mulindwa, praised the students and coaches for representing Uganda well.
Mulindwa said the success was the result of deliberate preparation and investment in sport rather than luck.
“We don’t win by mistake. We do enough preparations, while also investing heavily in nurturing talent, and that is our vision,” he said.
He said the school’s achievements in sport had complemented its academic record and created a pathway for young athletes to represent Uganda at national level.
“As a school, we have a very long story to tell, both in academics and sports, and we want to build a big legacy in Uganda,” he said.
“We have nurtured many players who have gone on to represent the country in national teams, including the national football, netball and basketball teams.”
Mulindwa said the school would not spend too much time celebrating the latest success, as preparations for next year’s competitions would begin soon.
“After this remarkable success, we now want to embark on preparations for next year’s local competitions,” he said.
Kitende head coach Zungu Hassan also credited the school’s leadership for supporting the teams throughout their preparations and participation in the regional competition.
He said the players remained focused and would immediately begin preparing for the next sporting season.
Among the individual performers recognised at the games was Kiranda Shifrah, who was named the Most Valuable Player in basketball.
Kyakuwa Ashraf was also nominated for the football player of the tournament award.
Both players attributed their performances to thorough preparation, teamwork and the motivation they received from the school.
For Kitende, the three trophies add to a long record of success in school sports and reinforce its position as one of Uganda’s leading institutions in nurturing young sporting talent.
The school will now turn its attention to domestic competitions as it seeks to maintain its strong performance in the coming season.
