Ugandan rally driver Posiano Lwakataka finished second in the three-day Huye Motor Rally Championship in Rwanda after a fuel pump failure affected his performance during the final competitive stage.
Lwakataka, who competed in his Mafumafu-sponsored Subaru N8, managed to complete the event despite the mechanical problem, which struck as he approached the end of the competition.
The rally covered 353 kilometres and was held in Huye District over the weekend.
Lwakataka participated at the invitation of the Rwandan government, which, according to him, fully sponsored his trip and participation in the event.
His second-place finish comes as Rwanda steps up efforts to develop its motorsport industry and pursue plans to host major international racing events.
Lwakataka said the Rwandan government had invited him to compete in its national rally championship starting next year.
He added that the government was willing to provide him with a car of his choice, alongside other support required for his participation.
The proposed arrangement could open a new chapter in the Ugandan driver’s rally career, although the details of the partnership are yet to be finalised.
Lwakataka said the next step would be for both parties to appoint lawyers to negotiate and draft a memorandum of understanding setting out the terms of their proposed partnership.
Speaking by telephone, Lwakataka told Bbeg Media he was ready to work with the Rwandan government, provided his conditions were accepted.
“I am okay with everything if the Rwandan government accepts my conditions,” he said.
