Culton Scovia Nakamya to head Buganda Media Centre

Former BBS TV journalist Culton Scovia Nakamya has been appointed as the coordinator of the Buganda Media Centre (BMC).

Israel Kitooke, the Minister of Information at Mengo, announced the appointment.

The centre relays and curates news related to Mengo, the seat of the Buganda Kingdom. For Buganda, it is the equivalent of the Uganda Media Centre, which coordinates news events for government agencies.

Nakamya was a prominent face at BBS TV, the Buganda-owned television station, before she left to pursue further studies in the UK.

She earned a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Gender, Media and Culture from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

On her return to Uganda this year, Nakamya set up a digital media firm and a podcast studio.

The appointment brings her back to a media house with close ties to Mengo, where she built her name as a fearless journalist, especially during the 2021 general elections, when she covered Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine.

In her new role, she will work full time, according to Kitooke.

Nakamya, born in 1993, worked as NTV Uganda’s correspondent in Luweero before joining BBS TV, where she became a leading reporter.

Her work has won several honours and in 2023 the African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) named her Uganda’s Inspiring Female Journalist. In 2024, she won the Urbanisation and Human Settlements Reporting award.

She is also the founder of Her Story Uganda, a media organisation that aims to improve how women are portrayed in the news.
