Buganda Kingdom, through its agricultural development agency, the Buganda Cultural and Development Foundation (BUCADEF), has signed a supplier agreement with the Dutch Seed Centre, which will be responsible for supplying products to the kingdom’s county supermarkets.
Speaking to Bbeg Media from his office at Bulange, Mengo, BUCADEF Chief Executive Officer Alfred Bakyusa described the development as a major milestone in the kingdom’s efforts to improve the livelihoods of the Kabaka’s subjects and stimulate productivity among farmers in Buganda.
“We welcome this great milestone in our journey to improve the lives of the Kabaka’s subjects and steer efforts that will stimulate productivity among our farmers in Buganda,” said Bakyusa.
He revealed that the agreement comes at a time when the first Ssemaduuka supermarket will be opened at the Buwekula County headquarters in November this year.
The Dutch Seed Centre was represented by Mark Dileman, who expressed his commitment to working with BUCADEF to boost agricultural productivity in the kingdom.
According to Bakyusa, BUCADEF chose to partner with the Dutch Seed Centre because it is a professional vegetable seed company in Uganda that has been in operation for over 15 years, providing high-quality seeds and agricultural services to both smallholder and large-scale farmers.
Bakyusa noted that the same company will supply products to all Buganda counties, including Kyaddondo, Ssingo, Busiro, Ssese, Mawogola, Kooki, Busujju, and Butambala, among others, where the kingdom supermarkets will be established.
He said these supermarkets will sell agricultural inputs, tools, and seeds to farmers across Buganda to boost production and ease access to quality inputs and markets for their produce.
BUCADEF is one of the flagship development agencies of Buganda, mandated to alleviate poverty and promote agricultural production and marketing throughout the kingdom.
