The Bible Society of Uganda (BSU) has announced that its fourth national Marriage Conference will take place on March 13, 2026 at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

The conference will be presided over by retired Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi of the Church of Uganda.

Speaking ahead of the event, Justice Mike Chibita, president of the BSU, said the conference is aimed at addressing challenges affecting married couples through a series of topical discussions.

Chibita said the conference is rotational, with previous editions held in Lira and Kabale before this year’s event was brought to Kampala.

He said the 2026 edition will focus particularly on novice couples and how they can sustain their marriages despite prevailing challenges.

He identified domestic violence and gender-based violence as major threats to stable families. Chibita said such forms of abuse have destroyed many marriages and negatively affected the mental wellbeing of couples.

“If someone is physically and psychologically tortured within a marriage, the pressure can lead to serious mental health challenges,” he said.

Chibita said Christian marriage is often misunderstood and poorly practised. He said the conference provides an opportunity to mobilise churches, especially young married couples, to promote Christian values in marriage across Uganda.

He added that while laws governing marriage exist, more effort is needed to preach the gospel and address divorce and persistent conflict within families.

The vice-president of the BSU, Rev Canon Rebecca Nyegenya, said many couples continue to seek divorce due to discomfort and unresolved conflict in their marriages. She noted that some women are left to raise children as single mothers after marriages collapse.

Nyegenya urged couples not to model their marriages on portrayals in mainstream and social media, saying such influences are often unrealistic and unsustainable.

She said in some cases, spouses place demands on their partners that cannot be met, creating tension that eventually leads to family breakdown.

Paul Boston, a member of the Bible Society of Uganda and one of the keynote speakers at the conference, said church leaders must take the lead in promoting stability and moral responsibility among married couples.

He said the conference will bring together clergy, counsellors and married couples to reflect on practical ways of strengthening families and addressing the root causes of conflict in marriage.
