Airtel Africa has announced the successful testing of satellite-powered mobile data and messaging services in Kenya, marking a major step toward expanding connectivity in remote areas.
The tests were conducted in locations without conventional network coverage. In these areas, Starlink Mobile technology was activated, allowing 4G-enabled smartphones to connect directly to a network of more than 650 satellites operated by SpaceX.
According to Airtel Africa, the trial demonstrated that users could access light data services such as WhatsApp calls and messages, maps, Facebook Messenger, and financial transactions through the Airtel app.
This meant customers were able to remain connected even in areas traditionally considered unreachable by mobile networks.
Sunil Taldar, the chief executive officer of Airtel Africa, said the milestone shows the company’s commitment to improving access to communication services.
He said the successful testing in Kenya demonstrates progress in integrating Starlink Mobile technology to ensure customers stay connected beyond terrestrial network coverage.
Following the trials, Airtel Africa and SpaceX plan to use the findings to expand the service across Airtel Africa’s 14 markets, including Uganda, subject to regulatory approval in each country.
The companies also plan to introduce voice calling and enhanced data capabilities using Starlink Mobile V2 technology, which is expected to enable broadband connectivity directly to standard mobile phones.
