Speaker Anita Among has pledged Parliament’s support to the Ministry of Health in efforts to curb the rising number of diseases particularly those related to eye care.

Among made the commitment while presiding over the launch of the RR Eye Camp organised in memory of entrepreneur Rajiv Ruparelia.

She assured health officials that Parliament would work towards increasing funding for the sector to enable the ministry to effectively deliver services.

“Treating people is your work, and you should do it. Parliament will make sure we increase the funding in health so that you do your work,” Among said.

The speaker also commended the Ruparelia Group, led by businessman Sudhir Ruparelia, for organising the eye camp which will take place in Bukedea District, where she serves as Woman Member of Parliament.

“I thank the Ruparelia Group for complementing government programmes by organising such a camp. You are taking services nearer to the people and I want to thank you,” Among said. [WATCH VIDEO]

Dr Grace Ssali, an ophthalmologist at Mulago National Referral Hospital who will lead the medical team at the camp, emphasised the need for improved eye care services, particularly for children and adults above the age of 40.

“Eye problems are rampant among children and treating them is costly. This extends to adults above 40 years,” Dr Ssali said.

Jyotsna Ruparelia, a board member and co-founder of the Ruparelia Foundation, said the eye camp scheduled for March 27 and 28, 2026, carries special significance for the family.

“This eye camp is special in that it is carried out in the name of our son Rajiv. Rajiv believed deeply in giving back, had an instinct to help people and genuine love for this country and its communities,” she said.

Rajiv Ruparelia, the son of Sudhir Ruparelia, died in a motor accident in May 2025.

Organisers say the fourth edition of the eye camp is expected to attract more than 5,000 patients from Bukedea and neighbouring districts.
