EC to hold fresh nominations following deaths of candidates

The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled fresh nominations for local government council positions in multiple districts following the deaths of some candidates who were previously nominated.

In a press release dated October 23, 2025, EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama announced that nominations will recommence on Monday, October 27, and end on Tuesday, October 28.

He noted that the dates apply to various electoral areas nationwide where candidates passed away following their successful nomination.

The provision mandates fresh nomination processes to replace deceased nominees before polling day, scheduled for early 2026.

“Previously nominated candidates in the affected positions at respective local government councils shall not be required to undergo nomination again,” Byabakama’s statement emphasised.

While the EC has not publicly listed the precise number of affected areas or positions, reports indicate that at least five local council candidates have died since nominations closed on September 24, 2025.

Among the confirmed losses is Elijah Kizza, a 58-year-old NRM nominee for sub-county chairperson of Nangabo in Wakiso. Kizza collapsed at a campaign rally on October 18 and was pronounced dead at a local clinic.

In Mukono District, 42-year-old opposition candidate  Sarah Nakato, representing the National Unity Platform (NUP) for a municipal division councillor seat, succumbed to complications from malaria on October 20.
