Rotary Club treats more than 500 residents in Katanga

The Rotary Club of Kampala-Wandegeya has conducted a health and sanitation initiative in the Kimwanyi Zone, Katanga, Kawempe Division.

During the exercise more than 500 residents were treated for various ailments.

Led by Peter Zaake, the chairperson of Rotary Health Days in Uganda, the initiative began with a needs assessment that identified poor sanitation, primarily due to inadequate garbage disposal blocking drainages, and limited access to safe drinking water as key issues.

Zaake emphasized that the campaign included a general cleanup and sensitization efforts to educate residents on the dangers of poor waste management, which contributes to preventable diseases like malaria and typhoid.

Richard Mutwafu, president of the Wandegeya Rotary district, highlighted their partnership with the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), which provided garbage trucks and manpower to desilt drainages.

Mutwafu noted that Kimwanyi’s overcrowded population of over 10,000 makes it particularly vulnerable to health risks. The initiative operates under the theme “Unite for Good Health and Sanitation.”

This effort aligns with prior reports of the Rotary Club’s work in Katanga, such as their Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project aiming to raise Shs 420 million to improve maternal and child healthcare and provide two 30,000-litre water tanks for clean water access.
