Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Commander Gerald Twishime has issued a stern warning to individuals masquerading as boda boda operators, urging them to register with their union immediately or face arrest.
He said unregistered riders contribute to confusion and crime within an industry that employs over one million people in Uganda.
Twishime made these remarks during the launch of a partnership between the United Boda Boda Riders Union and Spiro Motorbikes, where union members were offered motorbikes worth Shs 6,900,000, payable over two years with a deposit of Shs 100,000.
“We are delighted to support this partnership with Spiro Motorbikes and stand at the forefront of its success. However, we warn those causing confusion in the industry to comply with regulations or face legal consequences. We will back a disciplined union,” Twishime stated.
He commended the union’s development strategies, noting that they would help curb crime and accidents caused by theft, failure to pay permits, and reckless driving.
Twishime explained that many riders do not own their bikes, which often burdens original owners. He encouraged the union to pursue project proposals and urged riders to respect law and order, especially ahead of the 2026 elections, to secure a brighter future.
Frank Mawejje, the union chairman, emphasized the importance of timely repayment for borrowed bikes to avoid work disruptions. He urged riders to adhere to traffic laws and shared the union’s plans to invest in ventures like sports, cooperative SACCOs, boxing clubs, football, and netball to nurture members’ talents.
