Matia Lwanga Bwanika opens Shs 183m million health centre in Zzinga

Matia Lwanga Bwanika, the outgoing Wakiso district chairman, has commissioned a Shs 183 million health center on Zzinga Island, located within Bussi main island.

The facility, which includes a maternity wing, outpatient clinic, and ART clinic, was funded by the government’s U-GIFT program. During the commissioning, Bwanika expressed gratitude to the government for its support and pledged to equip the center with medical facilities, ensure adequate staffing, and enroll all staff on the government payroll.

“A health facility is not just buildings but a combination of medical equipment and skilled staff working to address the health needs of our people,” Bwanika said.

Bwanika also used the occasion to endorse his colleague, former Makindye Ssabagabo legislator Sempala Kigozi, for Wakiso district chairman in the 2026 elections. He described Kigozi as a trusted and experienced leader capable of building on the achievements of his outgoing administration.

Bwanika further announced his intention to represent Busiro South in Parliament to secure funding for improved roads, access to clean water, the construction of a secondary seed school, and support for youth and women’s projects.

Sempala Kigozi praised Bwanika’s achievements and promised to collaborate with him for the benefit of Wakiso. He urged the management of the new health center to secure a land title for the facility to prevent future land disputes, noting that the land was donated by Zzinga Island residents.

“I congratulate you on this project. Now, you must work on securing ownership of the land on which this health center stands to avoid future disputes,” Kigozi advised.

Residents of Zzinga Island raised concerns about high crime rates driven by alcoholism, domestic violence, and drug abuse. They also appealed to Wakiso authorities to address poor road conditions, limited access to clean water, impassable waterways on the lake, mistreatment by the military over allegations of illegal fishing, the absence of a police post with basic facilities, and the lack of a secondary seed school to support their children’s education.

Zzinga Island is a small island within the larger Bussi main island.
