Fifteen head teachers from Butaleja district have publicly endorsed Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), for the 2031 presidential election.
The teachers travelled from Butaleja to Kampala to formally declare their support for Gen Muhoozi, becoming among the first groups of civil servants to publicly associate themselves with his political ambitions.
The head teachers said their support for Gen Muhoozi was based on what they described as his efforts to promote patriotism, discipline and leadership in Uganda.
Hiire Amos, the head teacher of Bugosa Primary School, said teachers in Butaleja have placed emphasis on teaching patriotism to pupils and students and believe Gen Muhoozi represents the kind of leadership they want for the country.
“Supporting Gen Muhoozi is not a crime because he has been pivotal in promoting patriotism in the country,” Hiire said.
“We teachers in Butaleja emphasise the teaching of patriotism among students and children, and we believe that Muhoozi is the right candidate to become the next president of Uganda,” he added.
John Wabwire, the head teacher of St Mary’s Secondary School Kapisa, also praised Gen Muhoozi, describing him as a person who, in his view, demonstrates the character of a Ugandan through his actions.
Wabwire said Gen Muhoozi had taken steps to sensitise the public and members of the army about discipline and fighting corruption.
“He has moved a step towards sensitising the public and the army at large. He has instilled discipline in the army,” Wabwire said.
Meanwhile, Daudi Kabanda, head of the office of the PLU chairman, welcomed the teachers’ decision to publicly support Gen Muhoozi.
Kabanda described the teachers as courageous and resilient for travelling from Butaleja to Kampala to make their position known.
“You are the first people from the civil service to show this love for MK,” Kabanda told the teachers.
He urged them to build a strong support network for Gen Muhoozi in Butaleja and promised to facilitate a meeting between the teachers and Gen Muhoozi.
The endorsement comes amid growing public debate over Gen Muhoozi’s political ambitions and the possibility of him seeking the presidency in 2031.
Several political figures associated with the ruling NRM have in recent months publicly expressed support for Gen Muhoozi.
The latest is Aisha Ssekindi, the State Minister for Water and Woman MP for Kalungu.
Endorsing Muhoozi, Ssekindi said government and NRM leaders should no longer be hesitant about expressing their political preferences.
According to Ssekindi, Gen Muhoozi has passed through several stages of leadership and has gained experience that, in her view, makes him capable of leading the country.
“There is no more need to be shy or to hide. At the recent NRM retreat in Kyankwanzi, President Museveni categorically said that NRM members should start showing support for Gen Muhoozi,” Ssekindi said.
