The Commissioner for Climate Change in the ministry of Water and Environment, Margaret Athieni, has urged greater female involvement in climate change planning and implementation across all levels.
Speaking at the opening of the 4th Annual Women in Climate Change Conference held at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), she encouraged the adoption of clean cooking technologies to reduce deforestation and protect the environment.
Christine Naikimwero, the Shadow Minister for Water and Environment, emphasized that climate change impacts all Ugandans equally. She called on citizens to move beyond complaints and take decisive action to safeguard the environment by planting trees and halting wetland encroachment.
Dr. Pablo Martinez from the Greater Green Wall Initiative of the African Union highlighted their mentorship program, which has empowered women across Uganda to lead climate change efforts, recognizing them as vital agents of societal change.
Prof. Moses Muhwezi, Principal of MUBS, stressed the need for a curriculum overhaul in tertiary institutions to integrate climate change education across all courses, underscoring its importance in fostering sustainable development.
