The Democratic Party (DP) in Wakiso district has said it will back Maria Nassali Masereka as their candidate for the Kyadondo East MP seat in the 2026 general elections.
At a constituency meeting held at Afro Club Kasangati, Vincent Depaul Kayanja, the Wakiso DP chairman and former Entebbe Municipality mayor, emphasized the importance of restoring party unity and adhering to the party’s motto of “Truth and Justice” to rebuild DP’s influence in the region.
Kayanja urged party members to reject opportunists who abandon DP for personal gain.
“I want to ask you my fellow members to hold regular meetings and fill those vacant leadership positions with in your executive committee. We shall not wait for schemers to return after crossing to other parties for survival and selfish interests,” said Kayanja
He called on members to back Nassali in her bid to challenge the incumbent MP, Muwada Nkunyingi of the National Unity Platform (NUP). Kayanja highlighted that DP has decentralized its operations and committed funds and resources to support its candidates effectively.
Nassali, addressing the meeting, pledged to unite disgruntled party members, promote the rule of law, advocate for gender equality, and ensure effective representation in Parliament. The meeting, chaired by Kyadondo East Vice Chairman Shaban Lutaaya, resolved to replace former constituency secretary Swaibu Mukasa Nviiri, who defected to NUP, and warned against members who stray from DP’s core values.
Party members expressed regret for previously supporting Betty Ethel Naluyima, the incumbent Wakiso District Woman MP, who also joined NUP in 2021. They vowed to focus on building and supporting loyal DP candidates to provide alternative leadership addressing critical issues like access to clean water, better roads, fair taxation, youth unemployment, improved education, and enhanced health services.
