Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has urged the private sector to support the Uganda Red Cross Society’s efforts to deal with natural disasters. Nabbanja made the remarks at the launch of the society’s humanitarian fund at Kampala Serena Hotel.

had shifted calling for a need for effective and timely humanitarian responses to manage any eventualities that may hit the country anytime.
“Among other things, there is a growing and important role for the private and corporate
sectors to play in meeting humanitarian needs. I believe the private and corporate sectors in
Uganda can and must be at the center of the humanitarian support we need to build,” she said.
The call comes at a time when the country is struggling to deal with the Bulambuli landslides that killed more than 100 people and left thousands displaced.
Government spends at least Shs 6 billion per year to deal with disaster but the key actors in the sector say this is a drop in the ocean.
Robert Kwesiga, the secretary of URCS, said the various disasters Uganda has recently faced call for community resilience, blood donation drives and, public health innervations, all of which require money.
He said the launch of the humanitarian fund is intended to mobilize international, public, private and the public to mobilize resources for long-term collective funding towards work done by the society.
