Speaker Anita Among and her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa will on average spend Shs 800,000 per day on clothing next financial year.
The two offices have also been allocated a total of Shs 286 million for clothing. This means they will spend Shs 24 million per month, which translates into roughly Shs 800, 000 per day.
The figure has raised eye brows on social media with some people wondering whether the two individuals who are some of the biggest salary earners in Uganda deserve such expensive perks.
Besides clothing, the offices of the speaker and deputy speaker have been allocated Shs 990 million for entertainment.
Speaker Anita Among’s share of that is Shs 547 million while that of her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa is 443 million.
The money is supposed to cater for music, drinks, decorations and other party items for the speakers and their guests.
According to the budget breakdown, the speaker’s office total budget next year will be Shs 13.6 billion, which is more than the budget allocated to Kabale regional hospital (Shs 12.6 billion). The regional hospital handles at least 1,000,000 patients per year from Kabale and other neighbouring districts.
Parliament this financial year will spend a total of Shs 944 billion, which means that Parliament’s budget has increased three folds from Shs 371 billion, the 9th Parliament received towards the end of its tenure in 2015.
Since the 11th Parliament was sworn in in 2021, Parliament’s budget has increased averagely by Shs 100 billion each financial year.
