BRIEF MEMO: Who or what killed Brig Noble Mayombo?

Crux of the matter

Brig Noble Mayombo was a high-flying officer in the UPDF  and at the time of his death had risen to the position of Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Defence. He was also the board chairman of Vision Group.

Eloquent and argumentative, Mayombo died on May 1, 2007 in Nairobi where he had been rushed after he had collapsed and gone into a coma in Kampala.

His death has spun several theories and 17 years later, questions are still being asked.

What we know

  • Mayombo had a snack at office, went to Serena Hotel and had a few drinks with friends before retiring home.
  • Upon reaching home in Bukoto, he felt unwell and collapsed.
  • He was rushed to International Hospital Kampala where his condition worsened.
  • After three days, President Museveni availed his jet and Mayombo was flown to Aga Khan hospital in Nairobi where he died from “severe pancreatitis” according to a post-mortem report.

So, what’s the truth?

  • At his burial in Kabarole, Museveni said there were people in a neighboring country “who were not happy” with Mayombo’s work.
  • Museveni also said that he knew that Mayombo “had a certain condition” which he had “mismanaged.”
  • He instituted a probe committee led by Lt Gen James Mugira, CMI chief then, which came up with a report whose findings have never been made public.
  • In conclusion, Mayombo’s death remains a mystery. Did he die of natural causes? Was he poisoned? Did someone want him dead?
