At least 700,000 females in Uganda of child bearing age are unable to have children due to biological and other reasons.
This is contained in the 2022 Uganda Demographic Household Survey (UDHS) report on fertility in Uganda.
The report reveals that 3% of Uganda’s estimated 23.85 million women are infecund (can’t bear children). This translates into 700,000 women. The survey centred on women between the ages of 15 and 49 years who are married or are in a relationship.
Every woman surveyed said they would want to have a child in their lifetime. Of those who have had at least one child, 15% said they would want to have another one “soon.” 42% of the women said they would want another child “later.”
The same report shows that Uganda’s annual fertility rate stands at 3.7%. Karamoja sub region has the highest fertility at 6.7%. This means that women in the sub region have an average of seven children in their lifetime. It is followed by Bukedi sub region at 6.5%. Kampala has the lowest fertility rate at 3.7%.
