Opposition leaders call for unity as PFF holds first convention

Leaders from the Alliance for National Transformation, Conservative Party (CP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED) have urged the opposition to unite ahead of the 2026 elections.

They made the call at the first national convention of the newly registered People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party at Katonga Road.

The leaders, including Gen Mugisha Muntu (ANT), John Ken Lukyamuzi (CP), Saddam Gayiira (PDP), and Moses Matovu (NEED), hailed the PFF as a unifying force for Uganda’s opposition ahead of the elections.

“As we come together and bear witnesses to this official launch and national delegates convention, we welcome this reunion that has brought our old friends with experience in politics. We are now aware that when we work together, we shall defeat the tyranny of Mr. Museveni,” the opposition leaders declared in a joint statement to journalists.

The PFF’s launch drew massive crowds, causing heavy traffic along Katonga Road. Supporters, under tight security, entered the party premises after thorough checks. Vendors sold PFF-branded merchandise, including t-shirts, caps, dresses, and jewelry in the party’s official blue and white colors.

Dr. Lulume Bayiga, Buikwe South MP was officially unveiled as a PFF member. Bayiga, who previously aligned with Norbert Mao’s DP, expressed relief at finding a political home.

“I want to state that we are ready to be deployed to fight for the immediate release of PFF founding elder Col. (Rtd.) Dr. Kizza Besigye, his political assistant Obeid Lutale, and other political prisoners in Uganda, promotion of unity in the opposition, national consensus, and freedom for all, commitment to constitutionalism and good governance, devolution of powers, and equitable distribution of resources among Ugandans, which are the PFF’s cardinal shared values,” Bayiga said.

The PFF chairperson Elias Lukwago praised supporters for their resilience against “massive propaganda and intimidation” from President Museveni’s government. He urged them to focus on liberating Uganda and restoring constitutional order. “We should be guided by the values such as freedom for all, for not only Dr. Besigye and Lutale but for all suffering Ugandans,” Lukwago said.

Gen Muntu drew parallels with turmoil in Somalia and Sudan, attributing their decline to poor governance, human rights abuses, and military interference in politics.

“Why we need to work together, we want to avoid such atrocities,” Muntu said with a tinge of bitterness.

Lukyamuzi lauded PFF’s formation as a tool to counter Museveni’s propaganda. He accused the regime of undermining state institutions to serve a minority elite.

“We are fed up with your corruption and oligarchy. This has put our country on fire. Mind you, Uganda is not yours, Museveni. Free Dr. Besigye, stop abusing the law,” Lukyamuzi remarked.

Sarah Bireete, a civil society actor, lamented the erosion of Uganda’s 1995 Constitution, citing the detention of political leaders, unchecked corruption, state-orchestrated violence, oppressive laws, restricted press freedoms, and stifled civil society operations as evidence of constitutional abuse.

The event concluded with the swearing-in of PFF’s new executive members and regional governors, presided over by party lawyer Wandera Ogalo.
