The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has set its sights on winning more than 90% of the LC 1 elections, urging its supporters across the country to turn out in large numbers and vote for the party’s official flag bearers.
The elections will be held tomorrow, July 28.
The party’s electoral commission said the party was encouraged by its performance in the Women Council chairperson elections held on July 23 and believes it can achieve an even stronger showing in the LC1 polls.
Addressing journalists, Dr Tanga Odoi, the chairperson of the NRM electoral commission, called on all party leaders and supporters to actively participate in the elections.
“We want to win the LC1 elections with over 90%, just as we performed well in the Women Council chairperson elections held on July 23,” Dr Odoi said.
He urged members of the Central Executive Committee (CEC), MPs, veterans, district chairpersons, councillors, leaders of special interest groups, and all NRM supporters to mobilise voters and ensure a high turnout.
Dr Odoi noted that the government had declared Tuesday a public holiday to enable citizens to participate in the elections, saying no one should have an excuse for failing to vote.
“The fact that the day has been declared a public holiday means everyone has an opportunity to fully participate in the elections. Let us all turn up and support our flag bearers,” he said.
The NRM Electoral Commission also repeated its warning against members who choose to contest against officially endorsed party candidates.
Dr Odoi said the NRM remains an inclusive political party that allows members to express different opinions through its internal structures, but stressed that party discipline must come first once candidates have been selected.
“The NRM is a party for everyone. Even when we have disagreements within the party, we should put our differences aside and support our official candidates,” he said.
He appealed to party members to remain united throughout the electoral process, saying unity would strengthen the party’s chances of securing victory across the country.
The LC1 elections are expected to take place nationwide on Tuesday, with political parties intensifying mobilisation efforts to secure support for their candidates.
The NRM leadership says a strong turnout by its supporters will be key to achieving its target of winning the majority of the village leadership positions.
