The minister of State for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, has issued a stern warning to schools that have failed to register students for their national exams after mismanaging registration fees.
He described this as a criminal act under the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) Act of 2021. The warning came as the Uganda Certificate of Education examinations kicked off.
In the same address, Muyingo appealed to teachers currently on strike over salary enhancement to return to class, assuring them that the government is actively engaged in negotiations aimed at increasing teacher salaries. However, he noted that any salary enhancements will be implemented in a phased manner.
The minister also criticized certain authorities who are reportedly forcing teachers to resume work amidst the ongoing strike.
“This is not appropriate at all,” he stated. “As government, we believe in peaceful dialogue rather than applying force, and I am encouraged to see that some teachers have already returned to their duties.”
