The MK Project which was started to push for First Son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s presidential bid has been rebranded at a colorful function at Kololo Independence Grounds.
It is now called Patriotic League of Uganda. Their logo is of a lion on the hunt.
Promoters of the First Son’s presidential bid said the change in name will give it a broader political appeal and make less about Muhoozi and more about ideas.
Muhoozi did not attend the launch, which was presided over by Mike Mukula, the NRM vice chairperson for Eastern Uganda.
Ironically, Mukula, 13 years ago said in an interview with Daily Monitor that President Museveni should not “impose his son” on the people
At Kololo today Mukula was singing a different tune, praising the first son, with all manner of superlatives.
Mukula said Muhoozi had played a big role in defeating the LRA when they infiltrated Teso.
“Uganda is not a stage for you to come and act. It is not an experiment to government to govern Uganda,” Mukula said in a veiled attack on Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
The launch attracted other NRM bigwigs including ministers and MPs. Clerics from the various religious denominations attended the function.
In a statement, the group said it will mobilize Ugandans to fulfil their civic duties. It does not elaborate which civic duties.
Some analysts believe that the change in name is mere political semantics. Otherwise the group’s major task will be to mobilize people to support Muhoozi, who is still a serving army officer.
Some have likened new formation to People Power which later morphed into National Unity Platform. Will it also take this route and eventually become a political party?
