MUBS’ council holds retreat to chart path for academic excellence, dominance

Prof. Moses Muhwezi, the Principal of Makerere University Business School (MUBS), has presented a comprehensive report detailing the institution’s performance over the past five years.

Muhwezi made the presentation during a two-day retreat of MUBS’ Council at the Imperial Botanical Hotel in Entebbe. Muhwezi said that for MUBS to remain competitive, it must focus on research, technology, and innovation.

The retreat was also aimed at enhancing governance and strategic direction at MUBS.

Prof. Muhwezi commended the government for increasing MUBS’ annual funding from Shs 96.8 billion in previous years to Shs 139 billion today.

At the retreat, newly appointed Acting Deputy Principal, Prof Mindra Katoroogo, took an oath before the proceedings began.

The chairperson of the council, Olive Birungi Lumonya, said the major aim of the retreat was to find ways of building a resilient institution to advance the education sector.

“I am confident that the council’s diverse skills are vital in guiding the institution’s development,” Lumonya said.

She urged council members to uphold the university’s values while collectively working toward effective governance and management.

The deputy governor of the central bank, Prof Augustus Nuwagaba, who is also a council member, urged the academic staff to add value through research and innovation.

Currently, MUBS offers 15 postgraduate programs and 19 undergraduate programmes.

To stay competitive globally, the institution said it had adopted project-based learning guidelines approved by the Academic Board to enhance student outcomes.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, MUBS said it provides educational opportunities to inmates at Luzira Prison.

However, the council noted that a significant challenge remains in student welfare, as the government allocates only Shs 4,000 per student for breakfast, lunch, and supper, which is insufficient to meet their needs.
