Master’s degree holders among 1,300 applicants for trainee positions at Auditor General’s Office

At least 1,300 candidates turned up for aptitude tests to compete for the slots of IT officer trainees, Auditor trainees and Office Assistant roles in the Office of the Auditor General (OAG), held at Makerere University on July 31.

We have been told that some of the applicants who applied for trainee positions had master’s degrees in various business fields.

The overwhelming numbers of applicants, fighting for a total of 31 slots, highlighted the growing levels of unemployment and disillusion in the country where the number of graduates is much higher than the opportunities Uganda’s economy can create.

The process was managed by the Public Service Commission’s Selection Systems Department, with support from the OAG team.

This recruitment exercise followed an external advertisement by the OAG. David Ochieng, Assistant Commissioner overseeing the exams at the Public Service Commission, described the exercise as well-executed, with no power or internet disruptions, no exam malpractice, and disciplined candidates, indicating effective exam management.

He said the PSC will now compile a report ranking candidates by performance in each job category and submit it to the OAG’s Appointments Board, recommending a shortlist for the next stage of the selection process.

The OAG is mandated under Article 163 of the Constitution to audit and report on public accounts, covering entities such as courts, central and local governments, universities, public institutions, and corporations established by Parliament.
