Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago is currently hospitalised in Nairobi Hospital in Kenya due to a bulge in his cervical disc.
Lukwago who flew to Nairobi last week posted on X: “I afforded a little smile upon receiving this Easter gift from @NairobiHospital some form of a tranquilizer. Been here for a couple of days battling a spine/cervical disc bulge that has compressed the nerve roots causing numbness & excruciating pain at the back and left arm.”
It is the third time in four years that Lukwago has been rushed to Nairobi to receive treatment over various health complications.
In April 2021, Lukwago was admitted at Nairobi hospital after he developed chest pains, dizziness and abdominal discomfort.
In November 2020, he was rushed to Nairobi after suffering from acute anaphylaxis, a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction
According to specialists, the bulge in the cervical disc can be caused by:
- Trauma: A sudden impact or injury to the neck can cause a bulging disc. This may occur from a car accident, sports injury, or fall.
- Genetics: Some people are born with a predisposition to developing bulging discs.
- Overuse: Repeatedly twisting and bending the neck can lead to a bulging disc. This is common in professions such as nursing, landscaping, and construction.
- Poor posture: Sitting or standing with poor posture for long periods of time puts stress on the spine and can lead to a bulging disc.
- Obesity: Carrying excess weight puts strain on the spine and can lead to a bulging disc.
- Smoking: Cigarette smoking increases the risk of developing a bulging disc.
- Age: The older you get, the more likely you are to develop a bulging disc.
- Gender: Women are more likely to develop bulging discs than men.
- Pregnancy: Pregnant women are at an increased risk for developing bulging discs due to the added weight and changes in hormone levels.
