Local film makers seek government support

Leshan Kenogo, a panel moderator at the Ngalabi Film Festival, has called on the government to increase funding for the film and arts sector to empower young people who are using film and drama to drive social change in their communities.

Speaking to Bbeg Media during the 9th Ngalabi East African Short Film Festival, Kenogo emphasized the need for greater investment in the industry.

“As we celebrate the 9th Ngalabi film festival which has attracted many filmmakers from the East African region, Africa, and as far as Europe in Germany, we call upon our government to spend more on our trade that will help us train more film professionals and also purchase studio equipment at subsidized rates,” she said.

The festival, held annually, showcased films from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Germany, highlighting societal challenges such as poverty, disease, accidents, domestic abuse, depression, unemployment, drug abuse, and neglected families. The films aim to draw the attention of governments and stakeholders to restore hope and confidence among communities.

The 9th Ngalabi Film Festival is supported by Goethe Zentrum Kampala Uganda, a non-profit German cultural organization that promotes Uganda-German relations and fosters intercultural dialogue in partnership with the Goethe Institute.
