Innovators and regional hub staff at Kabale University have completed hands-on training in cybersecurity, privacy, and regulatory compliance.
The session, conducted by Ngura Consult on October 15 2025, aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to develop secure and compliant digital solutions from the earliest stages of product development.
The training formed part of the National ICT Innovation Hubās initiative, which collaborates with regional hubs to enhance innovation practices and promote responsible technology development.
It is part of the Digital Transformation Roadmap of the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, which identifies innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital skills as key pillars for advancing Ugandaās digital economy.
Don Oringa, Team Lead at Ngura Consult, emphasised that cybersecurity and compliance are now essential elements of innovation. ā
Embedding cybersecurity and compliance into the innovation process allows innovators to produce products that are secure, reliable and trusted by users,ā he said.
Lailah Nalukwago, Project Management Specialist at the National ICT Innovation Hub, said it was important to build cybersecurity capacity across regional hubs as a step towards strengthening Ugandaās innovation ecosystem.
āWe are ensuring that innovators and hub staff can meet regulatory and security requirements as they develop and scale their products,ā she explained.
The initiative comes amid rising cybercrime across Africa. According to the Interpol Africa Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2025, cybercrime now accounts for more than 30 per cent of reported crimes in Eastern and Western Africa, resulting in financial losses exceeding three billion dollars. These figures underscore the urgency of developing local capacity to prevent and respond to cyber risks.
By training innovators in cybersecurity and compliance at the Kabale University Regional Innovation Hub, the programme aims at reducing potential cyber losses among startups and ensure their products comply with the Data Protection and Privacy Act.
