New information has emerged regarding the NUP prisoners who recently pleaded guilty to treason charges. Reports indicate that the group led by Olivia Lutaaya Ssekitoleko (aka Machete) and Rashid Ssegujja was under the command of Waisswa Mufumbiro the current NUP spokesperson.
Sources in intelligence allege that the group had hatched a plan to overthrow President Museveni’s government even before the 2021 elections.
The sources claimed that in addition to manufacturing and distributing petrol bombs in Kampala, the group planned to incite a significant riot in the city. They identified crowded areas like Nakasero and Owino markets where they planned to cause mayhem.
We have been told that as they planned to execute this plan, they approached Ssempijja Bismark and Godfrey Kayongo Nkajja, two market leaders to reportedly to mobilize other market leaders and vendors to take part in the plot.
However before the plan could be executed, Museveni was alerted by intelligence who moved fast to issue a directive in September 2020 to the minister for Kampala, Minda Kabanda instructing her to remove all market leaders in the city and close their offices.
These leaders were replaced by NRM cadres Susan Kushaba and Faridah Kimuli. The president also ordered the then minister for security Gen. Tumwine to ensure the apprehension of all those who were involved in these activities.
By the time of writing, the whereabouts of Kayongo and Ssempijja were still unknown.
