Dr. Ezra Simon Yiga of the Democratic Front (DF) has officially announced his candidacy for the Gomba East parliamentary seat in the 2026 elections. He told Bbeg Media in an interview that his grassroots mobilization efforts significantly boost his chances of defeating the incumbent, Godfrey Ssaazi of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
“I want to assure the good people of Kyegonza, Kanoni, Mpenja, and Ttaba-Bbiizi that I am presenting myself as their parliamentary candidate in 2026. I urge them to support me in addressing critical service delivery issues,” he said.
A trained medical doctor from Makerere University with an accomplished career, Yiga promised to prioritize better healthcare delivery in Gomba East. His plans, he said, include advocating for improved remuneration for medical workers, equipping health centers with essential drugs and equipment, and pushing for reforms in the education sector to support disadvantaged students.
Dr. Yiga also pledged to empower youths and women through entrepreneurial skills training, modernize agriculture by lobbying for mechanized equipment, and promote cattle vaccination programs, given Gomba East’s location within the cattle corridor.
The region heavily relies on agriculture, with key crops including bananas, coffee, maize, and beans, and is known for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance.
Gomba East spans 405.8 km² with a population of approximately 90,544. It has a population density of 223.1 people per km². The demographic breakdown shows 48.8% males and 51.2% females.
However, it remains uncertain whether the constituents will back Yiga or re-elect NUP’s Ssaazi, who in 2021 defeated him when he ran as an independent candidate.
