Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, has ordered the arrest of Maj Gen Don Nabasa and Brig Johnson Namanya, two senior UPDF officers, for yet to be established reasons, sources have told Bbeg Media.
However, sources claimed it could be linked to the mismanagement of army resources. The two are said to be detained at an undisclosed army facility.
Nabasa, who in 2017 briefly replaced Muhoozi as commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC), was recently recalled to the UPDF headquarters for reassignment. He had been serving as the Joint Staff for Policy and Strategy.
Namanya has been serving as Commissioner for Citizenship and Passport Management at the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Gen Nabasa is a seasoned officer who has held several influential roles within the UPDF. He previously commanded the Third Division in Moroto and served as Uganda’s contingent commander in Somalia.
Brig Namanya, on the other hand, has had a diverse career. Before joining the army, he worked as a political journalist at the Daily Monitor.
In the early 2000s, Namanya was considered a close associate and informal advisor of Muhoozi during his formative years in the army.
While the arrests will come as a surprise to many, since taking over the command of UPDF, Gen Muhoozi has overseen a series of actions targeting alleged corruption and abuse of office within the army.
In 2025, he ordered the arrest of Maj Gen James Birungi, the former head of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), who was later charged with treason.
UPDF is yet to comment officially on the arrests.
This is still a developing story….
