Uganda will commemorate World Food Day on 16th October, marking the 45th edition of the event initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
The celebration, themed “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future,” will take place at the Rwebitaba Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute, a government entity located in Fort Portal, Kabarole District. During the event, scientists will unveil new improved crop varieties, including millet, banana, and Irish potatoes.
The announcement was made by the minister of Agriculture Frank Tumwebaze during a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre. He highlighted the significance of the day.
“This is a day when the world reflects on food safety, food insecurity, and climate change,” Tumwebaze said. He further noted that this year’s theme underscores the need for global collaboration across all sectors to create sustainable, food-secure systems. The commemoration coincides with the FAO marking 80 years of existence.
Tumwebaze also emphasised the crucial role of agricultural scientists, particularly through the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO). He commended their contributions to improving local seeds and animal breeds, noting that cattle farmers can now achieve significantly higher milk yields compared to the past.
The commemoration will feature various activities, including tree planting, dialogues with farmers, and showcasing a range of organic and non-organic food items produced in Uganda.
