The Electoral Commission (EC) has said it is still engaging the government on the organisation of Local Council elections, despite recent assurances from government officials that the country is ready to go to the polls.
Paul Bukenya, the EC deputy spokesperson, said the commission has not yet finalised the necessary modalities to conduct the elections.
In a message shared with journalists on a WhatsApp media group, Bukenya clarified the commission’s position following comments by Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the minister for Information about government readiness.
“Some of you reached out to balance the earlier statement made by Dr Chris Baryomunsi about the readiness to organise Local Council elections. However, our position remains that we are still engaging government to finalise all the necessary modalities to conduct these elections,” Bukenya said.
“Upon completion, we shall inform you, esteemed stakeholders and the general public, in a timely manner,” he added.
Bukenya urged the media to avoid speculation that could misinform the public and instead continue collaborating with the commission, as was the case during the recently concluded 2026 general elections.
Addressing the media yesterday, Baryomunsi said logistical arrangements were in place to ensure a smooth LC electoral process.
Baryomunsi called on political parties to organise their candidates to participate in the elections, which he said would be conducted without security challenges.
Uganda last held nationwide LC elections on July 10, 2018.
