The Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed that the National Voters’ Register display exercise will start on January 20, 2025 and end on February 10, 2025.
In a press statement, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the EC chairperson, said the original timeline set in the EC’s Roadmap for the 2025/2026 general elections had planned for the update to run from January 3 to January 24, 2025.
However, the new dates have been adjusted to ensure smoother preparations for the upcoming elections.
“As mandated by Article 61(1)(e) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, 1995 (as amended), and Sections 18 and 20 of the Electoral Commission Act (Cap 140), the EC is responsible for compiling, maintaining, and updating the National Voters’ Register,” EC noted.
The update exercise will take place at designated update stations across Uganda, running daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, including weekends.
According to the release, the major objectives of the update are: to allow eligible Ugandans aged 18 years and older who have not yet registered as voters to do so, enable registered voters to transfer to new voting locations if desired; provide an opportunity for registered voters to confirm the accuracy of their details and ensure they appear correctly on the Voters’ Register, and allow students, who were previously registered by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) and have turned 18, to update their information and be assigned a polling station in their area of residence or origin.
The commission called on the public to actively participate in the general update exercise, in line with the guidelines that will be issued.
