Nation Media Group Uganda has announced that it is resuming operations, a month after its television, radio, print and digital platforms were forced off air by the military.
In a statement dated July 28, 2026, the group’s chairman, Joe Muganda, said services would be restored gradually as the company completed what he called necessary operational arrangements.
“Nation Media Group Uganda is pleased to announce the resumption of its operations,” the statement read.
“Our services across television, print, radio and digital will be restored progressively as we complete the necessary operational arrangements.”
Muganda thanked audiences, clients and partners for their patience during the closure and said the group’s focus remained on delivering trusted and balanced journalism.
Nation Media Group operations in Uganda were halted on June 28, 2026 on orders of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the CDF, who accused some of its outlets of being biased against the government.
In the weeks before the shutdown, NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor had published investigations into the arrests of opposition figures, lawyers and human rights defenders in cases linked directly to Gen Muhoozi. The general said in a series of posts on X that the outlets would remain closed indefinitely and would only reopen with his personal approval.
Talks on reopening the outlets began almost as soon as the shutdown was announced. Andrew Mwenda, a journalist and spokesperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), said he had held discussions with Gen Muhoozi and that they had agreed the Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda would reopen soon.
That breakthrough appears to have come with Maganda’s announcement. Nation Media Group Uganda owns NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Daily Monitor, 93.3 KFM, 90.4 Dembe FM, Ennyanda newspaper, the Nation Courier and The East African.
It is not yet clear which platforms will return to air first, or how long the full restoration of services will take.
