Dr Kizza Besigye and his co-accused Obeid Kamulegeya Lutale will have a more comfortable Christmas, food-wise, than millions of Ugandans roaming Kampala streets.

This is largely in part because of the generosity of the People’s Front Freedom (PFF), a political platform he help co-found, which today drove to Luzira Prison with a pick-up full of food items.

The PFF team was led by the Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and comprised Doreen Nyanjura, his deputy and Ingrid Turinawe, a promoter of PFF.

Among the good items taken were: matooke, chicken, eggs, rice, baking flour, onions and tomatoes. There were also a couple of watermelons.

The quantity of the items shows that Besigye and Lutale are not the only intended beneficiaries. Other prisoners will join in the party.

Luzira prison banned cooked food in 2005 follwing the sudden death of one of the key suspects in the murder of Dr Robinah Kiyingi. The suspect died after eating cooked food laced with poison brought by a visitor. Today, the prison accepts raw food which is prepared by the prisoners.

This is the second time in 19 years that Besigye will spend Christmas in Luzira Prison. He spent the festive season of 2005 in the same prison where he had been locked up over charges of rape and treason. Court dismissed the charges.

Besigye and Lutale have been incarcerated in Luzira for more than a month after they were abducted in Kenya and charged in the General Court Martial with possession of firearms. Besigye and Lutale will appear in court again on January 7, 2025.
