Children with autism seek Kabaka Mutebi’s support for land

The executive director of Dorna Centre Home for Autism, Dorothy Nambi, has appealed to the Kabaka to support the organisation with land to expand its work with children living with Autism and Down Syndrome.

Nambi made the appeal at Bulange during celebrations to mark Buganda Disability Day. The event attracted people with disabilities from across the kingdom.

Speaking to Bbeg Media, Nambi said the centre is struggling with limited space and resources.

“I humbly ask our Kabaka to donate to us some land we can use to expand since the space where we are operating from is not enough. This can help us perform our work of caregiving and training these children with autism and Down syndrome better,” she said.

She added that her dream has been to meet Katikkiro Charles Mayiga to explain the challenges the centre faces as it tries to provide care to children who need constant attention and specialised support. The shortage of materials, funds and logistics has slowed the centre’s activities to what she described as “a standstill”.

Robert Nkwangu, the KCCA councillor representing PWDs, encouraged parents and caregivers to equip children with disabilities with vocational skills, saying many have proved capable in areas such as making briquettes for clean energy, printing, and producing arts and crafts.

He said these skills can help children earn a living and become economically independent.

“Parents should take these children to care homes like Dorna Centre Home for Autism to acquire vocational skills that can change their future instead of lamenting,” he said.

Dorna Centre Home for Autism was established to provide children and adults with autism the same social, educational and employment opportunities that others enjoy.
