The feud between business tycoon, Mutaasa Kafeero and a car dealer, Yassah Matovu has taken a twist with the dealer telling Bbeg Media that Kafeero did not “understand” the agreement.
Speaking through a representative, Matovu told us that according to the terms of the purchase agreement the down payment was not refundable.
“He read it and signed. But he did not understand it,” said the dealer through a representative who requested for anonymity.
Early this month, Kafeero took Matovu to court accusing him of breach of contract. Kafeero says the agreement he made with Matovu was to procure a Range Rover Vogue 2023 model but the dealer instead gave him a 2022 model.
Kafeero was prepared to buy the car for Shs 900 million and had deposited Shs 300 million. He was ready to pay the remaining Shs 600 million in 12 installments.
But when the Range Rover that Matovu delivered did not meet his specifications, especially the model, he asked for a refund which the car dealer declined.
Through his lawyers, Muwema and Company Advocates, Kafeero now wants the commercial court to determine whether or not Matovu was in breach of the agreement.
However, Matovu insists that he did not do anything wrong and blames Mutaasa Kafeero for failing to understand the agreement.
He said the vehicle that Matovu sold to Mutaasa was his [Matovu’s] personal vehicle, UBQ 436E, silver grey, which he had driven for some months.
Secondly, the car dealer says Mutaasa Kafeero inspected the vehicle before he made the first payment of Shs 300 million.
“He was satisfied with it but you know some people could have made him change his mind about the car,” said the representative.
Asked about the written agreement where Matovu pledged to supply the 2023 model or refund the money, the representative claimed that the agreement was signed under “some pressure”.
The representative said Matovu was ready to defend himself in court on July 10 when the case is due to begin.
