The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has launched a nationwide mobilisation campaign, calling on party leaders to remain united as preparations gather pace for the upcoming Local Council elections.
Senior officials from the NRM Secretariat have been dispatched across the country to lead sub-regional meetings aimed at strengthening grassroots mobilisation and rallying support for the party’s official flag bearers.
The meetings have been held in Acholi, West Nile, Lango, Bugisu, Karamoja, Bukedi, Greater Masaka, Greater Mubende, Greater Luwero, Greater Mukono, Ankole, Rwenzori, Kigezi and Bunyoro. They brought together Members of Parliament, district party chairpersons, LC V chairpersons and other party leaders.
The engagements were conducted under the theme that the party’s strength begins in the villages and that success at the grassroots depends on unity.
Speaking after the Acholi sub-regional meeting in Gulu City, NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong described LC I chairpersons as the foundation of both the party and the country’s leadership structure.
“Every village consists of households, and within the NRM, LC I chairpersons serve as household leaders for the party. They form the bridge between the population and the leadership, reaching communities even where the President cannot personally go,” Todwong said.
He said strong village structures are essential for building an effective party organisation that serves communities and sustains the NRM’s growth. He added that the party had already identified flag bearers in nearly all villages and was now focused on ensuring their victory in the elections.
He urged party leaders to stop actions that weaken unity and undermine the party’s electoral chances.
In Greater Masaka, Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja called on party members to end internal conflicts before the elections.
She said the biggest threat facing the NRM is not the political opposition but divisions within the party.
“Our biggest problem is not the opposition. It is our own members who fight among themselves and undermine each other,” Namayanja said.
She noted that many members who lose party primaries later contest as independents, splitting the NRM vote and costing the party victories in several constituencies.
Addressing leaders in the Bukedi sub-region, NRM Treasurer Barbara Nekesa urged party leaders to intensify grassroots mobilisation.
She said village elections are just as important as national elections because they directly influence service delivery and the implementation of government programmes.
“The village is where our strength starts, and we must stay connected with our people through vibrant grassroots structures,” she said, urging leaders to use village barazas to mobilise support for NRM candidates.
In Bugisu, the NRM concluded its sub-regional meeting in Mbale City with a renewed call for unity while paying tribute to former Second Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Moses Ali, whose death leaders described as a great loss to the country.
NRM Director of Information and Publicity Emmanuel Dombo said the nationwide meetings were intended to prepare MPs, district leaders, LC V chairpersons and other officials for the grassroots elections.
