A joint security operation is currently underway at the former office of outgoing speaker Anita Among, days after she fell out of favour with President Museveni.
On Sunday, Among withdrew from the speakership race for the 12th Parliament amid investigations of her lavish lifestyle and corruption.
At around 9.00 am, security personnel sealed off Among’s office, which is located on the fifth floor of the North Wing of Parliament.
The doors leading to the wing have been pasted with notices reading “Crime Scene. Do not Cross “. Staff attached to Among’s office were blocked from accessing the premises as heavily deployed security officers guarded the area.
Our reporter at Parliament said there is palpable anxiety among parliamentary staff and legislators, with movement around the speaker’s section significantly restricted.
The search comes a day after Among announced she would not seek re-election as speaker, citing ongoing investigations into her lifestyle.
The latest security operation also follows a series of recent searches at Among’s properties in Nakasero, Kigo, and Ntinda.
So far, neither Parliament nor security agencies has issued an official statement explaining the operation.
