MUBS cautions freshers on discipline, academic excellence [VIDEO]

The Acting Deputy Principal of Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Assoc Prof Rachel Mindra-Katoroogo, has urged new students to focus on academic excellence and maintain discipline during their stay at the institution.

She made the remarks during the 2025 Freshers’ Bash held at the school grounds next to the main building, where first-year students pursuing business-related courses were officially welcomed.

“So much will be possible when you do certain things because you are here to study, develop your character and prepare for life ahead of you. You are not here merely to meet course requirements for your next admission,” said Dr Mindra.

She reminded the students that their journey toward graduation starts from day one and encouraged them to work hard to achieve good grades.

“This is a building block for your future,” she said. “Excel right from the beginning because graduation begins today.”

Mindra, who is the first woman to serve as in that position at MUBS, urged the freshers to submit coursework on time, attend lectures regularly, and engage responsibly with both academic and non-academic staff. [WATCH VIDEO]

She advised them to keep track of their academic progress and make the most of the school’s supportive learning environment.

She also encouraged students to make careful decisions, stay focused, and seize every opportunity for growth. Mindra praised the current guild president, Rose Nabwiire, for her exemplary leadership and academic performance, urging new students to emulate her.

Turning to female students, Mindra advised them to dress decently, work hard, and uphold their values.

“You are not here to impress anyone but to invest in your future and in your country. We shall support you and challenge you to excel because when you excel, MUBS excels too,” she said.

Meanwhile, MUBS Principal Prof Moses Muhwezi cautioned both freshers and continuing students to behave responsibly, form meaningful friendships and networks, and remember that challenges are part of campus life.

He warned students against drug abuse, homosexuality, and other forms of misconduct, noting that some students fall victim to such vices before completing their studies.

“Many students have also fallen victim to HIV/AIDS before they graduate,” he said. “Focus on your studies and socialise responsibly.”

Prof Muhwezi revealed that the government, in partnership with the World Bank, plans to equip MUBS students with additional vocational skills to complement their academic programmes.

“We shall set up a large factory, a television studio, and other facilities to equip you with non-academic skills,” he said.

He commended sponsors who supported this year’s Freshers’ Bash for their logistical and financial contributions and urged students to support local businesses in return.

“Let us work together to build Uganda’s economy,” he said.
